The Jewel Beetle

in Animals

This beautiful Julodis beetle from Crete, Greece looks like a little golden sphere of sunlight in flight. It is a member of the Buprestidae family of beetles which are known as Jewel Beetles. The wing cases of some of the beetles in this family are an iridescent metallic green and have been used for many years in beetlewing jewelry although the practice is now dying out.
