Tom Thomson's Path Behind Mowat Lodge - 1917

in Art

Tom’s motivation to “record” this particular observation – colours of snow.

The shadows indicate the sun is from behind Tom’s left shoulder. With no biting insects and the heat of the spring sun, it would have been nice!

Daphne Crombie, the young bride of Lt Robin Crombie who was recovering from consumption at Mowat Lodge in the spring of 1917, suggested that the colours in the snow were all wrong in this painting. Tom insisted that she look for themselves in the afternoon to confirm that the colours were indeed accurate. She did and they were.
