Welcome to the sports blog for Thursday. The subject matter is the news that the Tennessee Titans have re-signed their second string quarterback Matt Cassel to a two year, $5.25 million dollar contract extension.
Cassel had he not signed his contract extension before the start of free agency in the National Football League which begins on March 9, 2017 would have hit the free agent trial.
Cassel, 34, will be the backup quarterback for the Titans behind starter Marcus Mariota for the 2017 regular football season as well as the 2018 football season barring any unforeseen circumstances.
Mariota is currently recovering from a broken leg injury during the 16th week of the National Football League season which sidelined him for the remainder of the football season.
Cassel started the final game of the 2016 regular season by leading the Titans to a 24-17 win over the Houston Texans.
The Titans current quarterback lineup is Mariota, Cassel and Alex Tanney as their third string quarterback.
Cassel is not an elite quarterback in the National Football League but he is the best backup quarterback the Titans have right now since the free agent market for quarterbacks during the free agency period in 2017 is not exactly bursting from the seams with many elite veteran quarterbacks looking for work for their new teams this year.
